Waltham Forest residents to share their memories for major cultural project

L&Q has successfully bid for £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund an exciting cross-generational culture project in Waltham Forest.

The project, called Across the Divide – Voice from the Heart of Leyton, will involve bringing young and older residents from Leyton together to explore their different and shared memories and perceptions of the area from 1945 to the present.

It will be run in partnership with national reminiscence charity Age Exchange.

Leyton is currently undergoing a major redevelopment and regeneration programme and this project aims not only to empower the community but also to celebrate its shared multi-cultural heritage through film, graphics and exhibitions before the physical landscape is changed.

Ciaran Porter, Neighbourhood Investment Co-ordinator at L&Q, said: “Now we have been awarded this grant it is a very exciting opportunity for us to create community cohesion and encourage discussion across generational boundaries. We hope this project will strengthen both the voice and confidence of older people and give young people pride in their community.”

It is hoped that the project will get underway in February 2009 so if you are interested in getting involved please email Ciaran Porter at cporter@lqgroup.org.uk or write to him at 10 Grove Crescent Road, Stratford, London E15 1BJ.
