Annual L&Q residents' awards

L&Q held an awards ceremony to recognise and thank residents who make a difference to people’s lives and contribute to their community.

Our mission is creating places where people want to live and we launched the Creating Places Awards to honour the residents who help us do just that. Residents and staff nominated more than 150 people. We invited those who reached the shortlist to a celebratory awards dinner at which they had the chance to meet celebrity guest Shaun Williamson – better known as Barry from EastEnders.

Creating Places 2007

We announced winners and runners-up in six categories:

  • Community Champion
  • Good Neighbour
  • Safer Neighbourhoods Awards
  • Sustainability Champion
  • Young Resident of the Year
  • Overall Resident of the Year

They varied in age from teenagers to elderly residents and came from a variety of different backgrounds. It was fantastic to see residents being nominated who come from what are considered to be typically hard-to-reach groups.

The lead-up to the awards and the ceremony itself were widely publicised in our resident magazine (Homelife) and on our website because we really wanted them to serve as an inspiration for all of our residents. We hope that by recognising residents who go out of their way to help their neighbours and boost their communities, other people will see that anyone can make a difference.

L&Q Group Chief Executive David Montague said: “The National Housing Federation runs annual Neighbourhood Awards and we thought this was an excellent way of recognising residents’ tireless work at grass-roots level.

We decided to run something similar for our own residents to show how much we appreciate their valuable work. If other housing associations were to do something like this, many more social housing residents across the country could have a moment in the limelight in recognition of their selfless efforts.”
